When to visit Kerala, month by month
September to March is the easy answer. What the other six months actually look like, and why the monsoon is cheaper for a reason.

September to March. That is the short answer, and for most people it is the right one. But Kerala is worth visiting in nine months of the year if you know what you are walking into, and the months everyone avoids are the months that cost half as much.
October to February — the easy months
Dry, bright, and warm rather than hot. The coast sits around 23 to 32 degrees. The hills are cooler: from December to February, Munnar nights can drop to around 10 °C, sometimes lower, and almost nobody packs for that. Bring a jacket.
Mid-December to mid-January is peak season. Hotels charge the most they will charge all year and the good ones fill months ahead. If your dates are fixed in that window, book early rather than book well.
March to May — hot on the coast, fine in the hills
The coast has daytime highs of around 32 to 34 degrees, with heavy humidity that makes it feel hotter, and Fort Kochi in the afternoon is hard work. The hills stay pleasant, which makes this a good window for a Munnar and Thekkady trip without the coastal leg. Fewer visitors, softer rates.
Thrissur Pooram falls in April or May. If you are anywhere near Thrissur then, go.
June to September — the southwest monsoon
Heavy rain, usually in bursts rather than all day, and the state turns a green that photographs badly and looks extraordinary in person. Prices are at their lowest of the year. Backwater cruising carries on as normal. Hill roads can be affected by landslides, so build slack into the itinerary.
This is also the traditional Ayurveda season. The reasoning is that cool, damp air opens the pores and makes treatment more effective, and it is when Keralites themselves book courses.
October to November — the second monsoon
The northeast monsoon is lighter and more intermittent than the southwest. Late October into November is one of the most underrated windows in the year: the landscape still has monsoon green, the rain has mostly stopped, and the December crowds have not arrived.
If you have any flexibility at all, late September to early November gives you most of what December gives you, at a fraction of the price and without the queues.
